Your customers are asking questions — to Google, to Siri, to ChatGPT. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of making sure your business is the source that answers them.
What AEO actually is
Traditional SEO earns a ranked link that a person clicks. AEO earns the answer that gets shown or spoken directly — the featured snippet at the top of Google, the response a voice assistant reads out, the box that resolves a query without a click. For a growing share of searches, that answer is the only visibility that matters.
The building blocks
1. Research the real questions. Start from how people actually phrase things — “how much does X cost”, “is Y worth it”, “X vs Y”. These conversational, intent-rich queries are where answer engines are most active.
2. Give a clean, extractable answer. Lead with a direct 40–60 word answer immediately under a question-style heading, then expand. Engines lift the concise version; readers get the depth.
3. Add structured data. FAQ, HowTo, and article schema tell engines exactly what your content means. Machine-readable content is far more likely to be selected.
4. Format for lifting. Short paragraphs, ordered lists for steps, tables for comparisons, and descriptive headings all make content easy to extract.
5. Earn trust signals. Author expertise, citations, reviews, and a strong brand reputation all feed the “should we trust this source” decision.
Measuring AEO
Track featured-snippet wins, “position zero” appearances, voice-result visibility, and impressions on question queries in Search Console. But keep your eye on the business outcome — the branded searches, calls, and enquiries that follow when you become the trusted answer.
AEO and classic SEO reinforce each other, and both feed how AI engines recommend you. Want help owning the answers in your market? Talk to Digitifex.
